“john lennon wall”

When you think of communism and the cold war, and walls, invariably you find yourself thinking about the Berlin Wall. However, whist that construction offered despair and the fear of no future, the John Lennon wall in Prague offered the opposite.

After his murder on 8th December 1980, John Lennon became a pacifist hero to many young Czechs. An image of Lennon appeared on this wall shortly after his death, and since then it has become somewhat of a shrine, with the addition of political graffiti and Beatles lyrics. At the time, the secret police (the StB) repeatedly covered the offending graffiti with whitewash, only for it to return just as quickly.

This wall became a political focus for the youth of Prague, in a time when musicians were jailed simply for playing pop music.

Today, you will see that the political messages of the 1980’s have given way to messages written by tourists. The feel of the pre-1989 days can still be felt, though, and this image shows that graffiti makes great art.
