Situated at the bottom of Petrin Hill is the striking memorial to the victims of communism, which consists of several ragged human figures in progressive stages of disintegration. This sculpture has proved controversial, with all the figures being male.
The terrible toll of the communist era makes striking reading:
205,486 arrested; 170,938 driven into exile; 248 executed; 4,500 who died in prison; and 327 who were shot trying to escape across the border to ‘the west’.
I was immediately taken with the haunting faces on these sculptures, and the eyes that appear to follow your every move, crying out for help and salvation.
This image will, I hope, ensure that this is another grim period in mankind’s history that will not be forgotten, but the torture and suffering will never be repeated.
